What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease in which the immune system increases the production of skin cells, causing them to accumulate on the skin surface faster than they can be shed.

This leads to red plaques covered with silvery-white scales that commonly affect the elbows, knees, scalp, lower back, and other areas of the body. The severity of psoriasis varies, from a few localized plaques to widespread involvement that can affect daily activities.

The exact cause remains unknown; genetic predisposition and environmental triggers such as stress and infections are common contributors. Psoriasis is not contagious and cannot spread through physical contact.
